Personal Track Safety Training
Personal Track Safety (PTS) is a certification for railroad workers in the UK. PTS is mandatory for everyone who maintains tracks, signaling systems, rail bridges and tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and stations.
-
Prerequisites
-
Personal Track Safety training is an essential part of the Sentinel program, which ensures authorization and safety in railway work. Training is only given to current or prospective employees of a British railway company or their authorized subcontractors. In addition, applicants have to acquire a medical certificate by an appointed physician and are screened for alcohol and drugs prior to the course.
Features
-
Courses contain instructions and information on railway infrastructure, acceptable work fitness, walking and working in a group, clear communications and emergencies. Apart from theoretical training in the classroom, participants perform track visits and some practical work for assessment. After the assessment and a theoretical test, certification is issued to successful candidates. PTS cards, also called Sentinel cards, are valid for two years.
-
Considerations
-
Training is provided throughout the U.K. by various independent agencies. To ensure validity, the training provider must be endorsed by Sentinel. Courses are classroom based, last for two days and cost approximately $320, as of 2010. In addition, a certification fee of $75 (as of 2010) is also imposed.
