What Is a Convector Radiator?

Keeping warm.

Convector heaters are one of the simplest forms of heating for the home. They run on a variety of fuels and can be easily maintained. They work by using convection currents to transfer the heat from the radiator into the room. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. How Convectors work

    • Hot air rises.
      Hot air rises.

Convector heaters work by transferring hot air. Fuel is heated in the radiator and the heat is transferred to the air molecules around it. Hot air rises so the warmer air creates convection current around the radiator which gradually warms the whole room.

    Types of Fuel

    • A convector heater can be run on electricity, gas or oil. The actual fuel is not open to the air and is enclosed in the heater so although an open fire might appear to work in a similar way, it is not a convector, as the flame heats the air directly.

    Dangers

    • Beware of very high temperatures.

Convector heaters are usually made of metal and can become very hot to the touch. If the heater is mounted on the wall or is free-standing there is a danger that it could cause burns if an adult or child accidentally fell onto it. Putting a guard around the fire is a sensible solution when young or infirm people are around.
