How Long Does it Take to Fully Detox From Alcohol?
Alcohol detoxification is a process best not attempted alone. An alcoholic who has decided to detox should receive congratulations and then an escort to a medical facility for care. Detoxing alcoholics require monitoring throughout the process.

Beginning Detoxification
-
The process begins by removing alcohol from the system. As the body is removing the alcohol, withdrawal symptoms occur six to 48 hours after the last drink. Symptoms improve and worsen over the next 24 to 48 hours.
Emotional Support
-
As the first stage completes, the alcoholic needs counseling and emotional support to curb the body's continued cravings. Psychologists and medical doctors work together to monitor the alcoholic's physical and psychological well-being. Alcoholics are most successful in a rehabilitative center for this stage because they receive continuous support until their cravings subside. This stage can last from two days to one week.

Final Stages
-
The final stage of a detoxification program is the release of the patient by a medical doctor. Depending on the individual and the severity of addiction, the release can happen up to two weeks after the admission to the rehabilitation center. Each case should be handled individually, and the time frame is measured by the progress of the patient.
