The FLA file extension is associated with the movie-authoring program called Flash. Made by Adobe Systems, Flash is the premier application for creating mobile content and interactive websites that utilize video, graphics and animation.

  1. Meaning

    • The FLA extension, which is also commonly used as FLAC, means Free Lossless Audio Codec. Similar to a .ZIP file that reduces large text or graphic files to a more manageable size for easy storage and sharing, the FLAC file is an open-source format that compresses audio without any loss in quality.

    Using FLA Files

    • The FLA extension is associated with the working movie file in Flash, meaning the basic document file used in content development. When a movie is complete, the FLA file is exported from Flash as an .swf file. The .swf movie file is played in the Flash Player and cannot be edited. Flash Player is available in most Web browsers.

    Opening FLA Files

    • FLA files are opened in Adobe Flash, where they can be edited and then exported into another media file format.
