FLV is one of two video formats used to record and play video over the Internet with Adobe Flash Player. It is also one of the primary formats for embedded video on the Web, since Adobe Flash Player can run as a browser plug-in.

The FLV file format was originally created by Macromedia in 2002. It served as the primary video format for their multimedia application, Shockwave Flash. The Flash Player, however, was later acquired by Adobe Systems when the company merged with Macromedia in 2005, at which time it was re-named Adobe Flash Player.

Used as a browser plug-in, the Adobe Flash Player has allowed the FLV file type to become one of the most widely-used formats on the Internet. The format graces some of the most frequently visited video sites on the Web, including MetaCafe, Google Video, Yahoo! Video, YouTube and Hulu.
