What Makes a Good Nurse Manager?

What Makes a Good Nurse Manager? thumbnail
Good nurse managers are both knowledgeable and friendly.

Careers in nurse management are increasing in popularity, according to Patrick R.Coonan, author of "Practical Guide to Leadership Development." They offer a stable salary, and more responsibility and flexible hours than many other nursing jobs.

  1. Knowledge

    • Advanced degrees are often necessary for even the most basic jobs in nurse management. Some positions--such as night supervisor, charge nurse or unit leader--require only a licensed practical nurse certification, but you'll need a registered nurse or nurse practitioner license for other positions.

    Patience

    • Nurse managers provide more than just basic patient care--they resolve problems among staff members and customers, and promote the agency's reputation to the public. Patience and maturity are needed to resolve the complicated medical, and sometimes legal, issues that arise in health care.

    Concern

    • A capable nurse manager has concern for her patients and her staff. Nursing is an upwardly mobile career, with readily available opportunities for growth, so managers should take a personal interest in employee development. This allows everyone at the company to reach their potential.
