How the iPod Has Changed Since 2001
In 2010, the iPod has become synonymous with personal audio devices and music downloading. First introduced in 2001, the iPod has retained its minimalist design and functionality, so that almost anyone can operate it. From push-button screens to touch screens, the iPod is the standard for mp3s and digital music.

Size and Price

The first iPod, introduced in 2001, held 5GB of music. In 2002 Apple introduced a 10GB model for $499 that also allowed owners to inscribe their name on the back. Later in 2002, a 20GB model came out. In 2004 the 4GB iPod mini came out for $249. Later that year Apple added more storage space with a 15GB iPod. In 2004 a 40GB and 60GB color screen iPod photo hit the market. 2005 saw the birth of the iPod Shuffle in 512MB and 1GB versions. Small and compact, these sold for around $100. In 2005 an even smaller iPod nano came out in 2GB and 4GB. In 2006 the first generation iPod touch screen was introduced. Different generations have emerged for all of these since 2006.

In 2001 the iPod was released to the public strictly for Mac computers. In 2002 Apple created software that allowed for storage and organization of music on the computer. The devices then became available for Windows PC users. In 2003 Apple introduced the iTunes online music store. Also in 2003, an iPod update allowed users to manage photos and voice recordings on the iPod. In 2005 Apple added the ability to view movies.

In 2002 Apple added a touch wheel to search for songs, replacing the scroll wheel. In 2003 the touch wheel was updated to include four buttons: menu, rewind, play and fast-forward. In 2004, with the iPod mini, the iPod was given colors and made slimmer in design. In 2004 with the iPod Photo, Apple introduced the first color screen. In 2005, with the iPod Shuffle, Apple introduced a new, much slimmer design and random control over song selection. 2006 introduced a brighter screen and longer battery life and iPods allowed users to view videos. 2006 also introduced the touch screen iPod, requiring only the menu button. Over the years, iPod nanos got smaller and were available in more colors. Every year picture quality was improved.
