Why Do I Need a 3rd-Party Program to Access My FTP Files?
Computer users who need to connect to a Web host or Internet service provider's remote sever or who need to access files on an organization's network will frequently use a computer program known as an FTP client.
-
Function
-
FTP programs such as Filezilla or WS FTP use File Transfer Protocol to connect to remote servers (computers) that contain files. These programs function similarly to email programs in that they connect to the server and allow the user to download data (f9iles), using a specific protocol. File transfer programs are both available for free and as commercial software from many software manufacturers, including IPSwitch.
Benefits
-
Using the standard FTP protocol, users can upload (or download) or view files on a remote computer, such as the server of a Web host. The user can then edit files with the programs of their choice on their local computer before re-uploading the files to the remote server. FTP programs frequently complete these transmissions more quickly than using Web-based alternatives.

Considerations
-
Users who are not familiar with FTP programs or usage may be able to use a Web-based file-managing program if one is available. For example, website owners whose host uses H-sphere or cPanel as the server configuration software have an option to upload, download or modify files using their Web browser.
