BNC connectors hold coaxial cables in place with a quarter turn of the collar.

Coaxial cables carry electronic signals at radio frequencies between equipment stages and attach transmitters to antennas. The frequency ranges for various types of BNC connectors depend on impedance and distortion known as "reflection" or "standing wave" (VSWR) requirements.

  1. 50-Ohm Types

    • Fifty-ohm BNC connectors typically work up to 11 GHz, but specifications are only given up to 4 GHz. Straight connectors have a VSWR rating of 1.3 maximum from DC to 4 GHz. Right-angle connectors have a VSWR rating of 1.35 maximum for DC to 4 GHz.

    75-Ohm Type 1

    • Type 1 75-ohm BNC connectors also only have VSWR ratings up to 4 GHz. They should work with a VSWR rating of 1.5, plus or minus 0.1 GHz from DC to 4 GHz. Type 1 is recommended for all 75-ohm signals above 1 GHz.

    75-Ohm Type 2

    • Type 2 75-ohm BNC connectors have a much better VSWR rating than type 1; 1.00 plus or minus 0.25 DC to 1 GHz. Type 2 should not be used above 1 GHz.
