The History of Hallmark Lionel Ornaments

Hallmark introduced the first Lionel Christmas ornament in 1996. Each year Hallmark has issued a new commemorative locomotive, adding other cars along the way. The ornaments are popular among Hallmark collectors and Lionel train enthusiasts.

Additions

Hallmark released locomotives only from 1996 to 1998, according to the website Hooked on Hallmark. In 1999, the company introduced a Lionel Tender. Since 2002 Hallmark has offered three train ornaments each year that complement the annual locomotive ornament.

Miniature Ornaments

Hallmark introduced the Norfolk and Western series as a miniature Lionel ornament in 1999, according to Hooked on Hallmark. Today the company continues to release a miniature ornament set annually.

Availability

New Lionel commemorative ornaments are available at Hallmark Gold Crown Stores beginning in July each year, according to Lionel. Hallmark has been allowed to create these ornaments through a licensing agreement with Lionel.

Special Items

Hallmark periodically releases limited edition ornaments, such as the Kansas City Southern Locomotive that was only available while supplies lasted in October 2010, according to Lionel.
