Safety Training for a Workshop

The workshop can be a dangerous place if equipment is used incorrectly. Accidents can be prevented with the correct safety training and safety precautions or at least made less frequent.

  1. Significance

    • Accidents include cuts, eye injuries and hearing damage. Wear plastic safety goggles that are not too scratched up, since visibility is important. If you work around a loud piece of machinery, wear ear protection. For those who weld, gloves and thick shop clothes are important.

    Dress

    • In addition to wearing protective equipment, dress right. Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes in case anything heavy drops on your feet. Don't wear clothes with loose strings or sleeves that can catch in some machinery. For those with long hair, tie it back.

    Considerations

    • Don't attempt to use machinery that you don't know how to use. Prepare your workstation well. If you anticipate a lot of dust, turn on the dust collector. Stand well away from other people while working so that you don't accidentally bump into someone. If you are working with a large piece of material, ask for help to hold it. Your work space should be clear of any clutter.

    Etiquette

    • Respect others in the workshop. Do not run or distract someone who is using a piece of machinery. Tidy up after yourself and notify the individual in charge of any broken machinery.
