Greenhouse Winter Temperatures

Orchids require greenhouse temperatures of at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

All greenhouses require a source of heat during the winter. Greenhouse temperatures vary depending on the types of plants you're growing, with each plant having an optimum temperature and a tolerable temperature in which it can grow. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Temperatures

    • Tropical plants require winter temperatures of at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit to grow. Most orchids prefer minimum temperatures of 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Some vegetable plants and flowers, including cucumbers, require a steady temperature of 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and nighttime temperatures no lower than 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Inadequate Temperatures

    • Temperatures that are lower than optimum may keep the plant growing, but not as fast as if the temperatures are on target. When the temperature drops too low, the plant's growth may stop. Plants may be damaged when temperatures fall outside of the tolerable range.

    Heating Systems

    • A dependable source of heat with accurate thermostats remains important in establishing temperature control both in the winter and summer. Heating systems may include space heaters that use fans to distribute the heat. Another option is hot water systems that use piping under the greenhouse benches to deliver heat.
