Loss of Productivity Due to Poor Site Conditions in Construction

Loss of Productivity Due to Poor Site Conditions in Construction thumbnail
Construction sites should be well organized and safe.

Constructions sites can seem like chaotic places to work, but in fact, well-run sites operate smoothly and efficiently. Unfortunately, if site conditions are poor, not only is productivity decreased, but lack of safety also can become an issue.

  1. Planning

    • An important aspect of site conditions is where to begin construction in the first place. If the wrong location is picked to begin building, such as one with poor soil quality, severe water runoff, or without appropriate zoning ordinances, the entire project may be doomed before it begins.

    Materials

    • If building materials are not delivered, organized and maintained on the site in an appropriate manner, any resulting productivity likely will be inadequate. If heavy or hazardous materials need to be moved to a different location more than once during a build, hours, and even days, can be added to the project's timeline.

    Warning

    • Safety must be a consideration when planning site conditions. Never attempt to increase productivity by decreasing or even eliminating basic precautionary measures, such as appropriate training for workers in the use of dangerous machinery or chemicals.
