What Liquor License Is Required in Indiana to Be a Bartender?

In Indiana, bartenders must be at least 21 years old.

Indiana's Alcohol & Tobacco Commission (ATC) oversees regulations and licensing for people working in the alcoholic beverage sales and service industry, including bartenders in restaurants, bars, breweries and wineries. Bartenders in Indiana must be at least 21 years old.

Required Application Information

Bartenders generally receive a three-year employee permit.

Of the three permits that Indiana issues, bartenders need to be concerned with two, the three-year employee permit or the two-year volunteer permit for individuals working only for non-profit organizations. Applicants must reveal any driving-under-the-influence convictions in Indiana or another state in the last 10 years and whether or not they are on probation for a DUI offense.

If the applicant has unpaid state taxes, he will not receive a permit until they are paid. Also, the applicant must explain if he has been denied a server permit or had one revoked in the last five years, and attach a driving record if he has had a driver's license from another state in the last 10 years.

Indiana Certified Trainers

Indiana requires bartenders to complete a certified training course.

Everyone who is issued an Indiana alcoholic beverage permit must complete a state-approved server training course within 120 days of receiving the permit. The ATC has certified more than 120 trainer and training facilities for bartenders and other servers.

Indiana's 92 counties have local alcohol beverage boards and may review permit applications for their area.
