The scam typically begins when the applicant replies to an ad for envelope stuffing. Payment is promised once a minimum of stuffed envelopes are mailed back to the employer. However, the employee must first pay for these materials before she can even begin work.

The scam works because of the outlay of money by the "employee" at the beginning. Often, once the requisite number of envelopes have been stuffed and are ready to mail, the "employee" calls the "employer" for payment -- only to find the number's disconnected. The employer was really just a scam artist who made off with an innocent person's money.

There are very few legitimate envelope-stuffing opportunities available to the average worker unless they are part of a business you run yourself. As with any new job, work out a timely pay schedule with your employer, and if anything seems amiss, do not hesitate to decline the job.
