The Luhr-Jensen Jet Diver is a diving planer that fishermen use to retrieve lures at a specific depth while trolling. Jet divers work in rivers as well as lakes, and are useful for pursuing fish like steelhead, lake trout and walleye, which often school around submerged structure in water of various depths. Because jet divers are buoyant, they are effective at resisting snags, and will float to the surface if the retrieve is stopped.
Fishing With the Jet Diver
Tie your fishing line to the swivel attached to the forward fin of the jet diver to connect it to your fishing rod. The diver has a second swivel on its bottom, to which you should tie a separate fishing line 4 to 6 feet in length. Tie the lure of your choice to the tag end of this line. Cast the lure and jet diver off the back of your boat so that about 100 feet of line is released. Close the bail on your fishing reel, place the rod in a rod holder at the rear of your boat and begin trolling. Jet divers work well at speeds between 1.5 and 2.5 miles per hour. Several jet diver sizes are available, each with its own specific diving depth from 10 feet to 50 feet. Larger models reach a greater depth. A variety of baits, including crank baits, spinners, spoons and live baits like minnows and shrimp, are effective when trolled behind a jet diver.
