1967 Chevy 396 SS Information

"Super Sport" is a package originally conceived in 1961 with the Impala SS and continues to epitomize modern Chevrolet muscle car performance. In 1967, three Chevrolet models were available with the SS package with features such as upgraded --- and sportier --- body and interior trim, performance suspension and wheels, gauges, and more powerful engines. Three versions of the 396 V-8 engine were available.

  1. Camaro 396 SS

    • The Camaro SS had the then-new 350 cubic inch engine as its base-engine, but two optional 396 cubic inch big-block engines could be ordered: the 325 horsepower (L35) and 375 hp (L78 in late 1967) versions. The 1967 Indianapolis 500 pace car was a 396 RS/SS Camaro Convertible.

    Chevelle 396 SS

    • The 1967 Chevelle Super Sport had only two engines available from the factory: the 325 hp base (L35) 396 and the 350 hp (L34) 396. The 375 hp (L78) version was used only in Camaro Super Sports, but some L78s were dealer-installed in the Chevelle.

    Impala SS

    • The only 396 cubic inch engine available in the Impala SS was the base version: the L35, rated at 325 horsepower. The 327 V-8 was standard. A very rare Impala SS, the SS427, was available: only 2,124 were produced with that engine.

    Nova SS/Elcamino SS

    • Interestingly, GM did not offer the 396 engine in the Nova SS until the 1968 model year. More interesting still, the 1967 El Camino was available with the 396, but not as an SS model until 1968.
