How Are Pinworms Spread?

Pinworm infection can be prevented through proper hand-washing.

Pinworms are parasites that live in the large intestine. Female pinworms leave the intestines and lay eggs around the anus of the affected person. The most common symptoms are extreme itching around the anus, difficulty sleeping and irritability.

Hygiene

Pinworms are most commonly spread when an infected person scratches around the anus and does not wash his or her hands. This causes eggs to become lodged under fingernails or stuck to the fingers. The most common locations of pinworm infections are daycare facilities, schools and other institutional settings.

Transfer

Pinworm eggs can be transferred from clothing items, bedding or unwashed hands. Pinworm eggs may also be inhaled or eaten in contaminated food items. Pinworm eggs can survive for up to two weeks without a human host.

Prevention

Prevent infection through frequent hand-washing, daily bathing and washing bedding and clothing on a frequent basis. Discourage children from scratching the bare anal area, and do not allow a child to go to school for 24 hours after the first treatment if he or she is infected.
