How to Fix Tuning Problems With an Epiphone Les Paul

The majority of tuning problems on an Epiphone Les Paul are easily remedied.

The Epiphone Les Paul is essentially the same guitar as the Gibson Les Paul, but it is made overseas and thus more affordable. While it tends to have issues with staying in tune, a few minor procedures can solve the problem.

Nut

The nut is the small, grooved piece at the end of the neck where the strings rest. Sustain, tone and tuning are all related to the quality of the nut. If the nut is worn, then the guitar's tuning can be affected. The best materials for a replacement nut are graphite and bone.

Truss Rod

The truss rod is the small, cylindrical rod that is inside the neck of the guitar. Too much or too little tension can cause the neck to bow and thus negatively affect the tuning. On Epiphone Les Pauls, access to the rod is found at the end of the neck, right under the nut. Take an Allen wrench or a hex key and do a small, 1/8 turn (clockwise tightens, counter clockwise loosens).

Strings

Heavier gage strings tend to stay in tune better. However, if light gage strings are what you're used to, find a compromise. When selecting strings, go heavy enough to improve your tuning, but still light enough to play the way you like.
