How Do I Remove Wax From Holders?

An inevitable part of burning candles: melted wax buildup.

Burning candles can freshen up a room and add to the decor, but the frequent result is a buildup of wax in the candle holders. Fortunately, with a little effort, you can prevent this from happening or easily remove the wax.

Prevention

Placing a small amount of water in the bottom of the candle holder before placing the candle inside will prevent wax from sticking to the candle holder as it melts. Purchasing higher grade candles without additives prevents staining and excessive dripping. Drafts will cause excess dripping in candles, resulting in an excess of wax buildup, so be sure your candles aren't near any windows, vents or fans.

Heat

Adding heat to the candle holder will melt the wax and allow it to be removed. This can be done by sticking the candle holder in the microwave or oven on very low heat, or by placing the holder in a bowl of warm water. Once the wax has melted, remove it with a spoon or knife and rinse the holder with soapy water.

Cold

Placing the holder in the freezer overnight will result in the wax popping out of the holder. The wax should come free with a minimal amount of pressure from your fingers, butter knife or spoon. Be careful not to exert too much force, because frozen holders can be more fragile than unfrozen holders.

Warnings

If applying heat, be sure that your oven temperature does not go above 150 degrees. Heating times vary depending on the wax, so watch your candle holder carefully. Regardless of the method of removal, allow the holder to come to room temperature before using it for candles again.
