Flowers in Bloom in February & March

Wintertime is often harsh on flowers; however, there are winter-hardy flowers that bloom in February and March. Winter flowers have showy foliage that complements the plants' blossoms.

Types

The winter iris (Iris unguicularis) is a perennial herb that blooms from December to March. Daffodils (Narcissus spp.) are perennial herbaceous winter flowers. Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudifl) is a deciduous shrub that blooms in late winter, while Heath (Erica carnea) is a hardy winter plant that blooms from January to May.

Descriptions

Winter iris' have sword-shaped, evergreen leaves and aromatic blue flowers. Daffodils have lengthy, thin leaves with yellow or white flowers. Each flower blossoms on a flower stalk. Winter jasmine has glossy green leaflets with an oblong shape. The flowers are golden-colored funnels. Heath plants grow 6 to 10 inches tall and have a spread of 20 inches. The flower blooms in colors of magenta, pink and white. Heath plants have colored foliage ranging from green to bronze.

Origins

The winter iris originates in the Mediterranean and North Africa. Daffodils are native to Morocco, Portugal, Spain and France. Winter jasmine is native to China, and Heath originated in Eastern Europe.
