Watts Vs. Lumens for Incandescent Lamps

Watts Vs. Lumens for Incandescent Lamps thumbnail
Incandescent lamps are the oldest and most common types of light bulbs.

Watts and lumens are both used in the equation for a lamp's efficacy, or the ratio of light produced to energy consumed, according to Energy Savers. Incandescent lamps have a relatively low efficacy compared to other lighting options. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Watts

    • Watts are a measure of energy use, according to Virginia Tech. The amount of energy used by a particular lamp has an effect on the amount of light the lamp puts out.

    Lumens

    • A lumen is a measurement of light emitted by a lamp, as defined by Energy Savers, and a 100-watt incandescent lamp usually emits about 1,750 lumens.

    Efficacy

    • The efficacy of a lamp is measured as the number of lumens produced by the lamp divided by the rate of electricity consumption (lumens per watt), according to Energy Savers. Incandescent lamps generally have an efficacy of about 17.5 (1,750 lumens divided by 100 watts) but they range from 10 to 17.
