What Is Free PSA?

The National Cancer Institute defines free PSA as the amount of protein prostate-specific antigen in the blood that is not attached to other proteins.

  1. PSA Test

    • PSA tests are offered which take blood samples from subjects to measure free PSA levels in the blood stream. This test helps determine future health risks for the subject.

    High Free PSA

    • An abnormally high percentage of free PSA is indicative of benign prostatic hyperplasia or what is more commonly referred to as an enlarged prostate. An enlarged prostate can cause urinary complications.

    Low Free PSA

    • A low percentage of free PSA increases the risk of suffering from prostate cancer. A follow-up test and biopsy are encouraged after receiving a test indicating low levels of free PSA.
