Army Code of Conduct for the Wife in Fort Lewis

Army wives whose spouses are stationed at Fort Lewis have an unwritten set of rules that they follow concerning military personnel and the U.S. Army. When a wife doesn't adhere to these rules, she reflects poorly upon her spouse.

  1. Walking Together

    • A wife walks on her husband's left side so that he may salute higher-ranking commissioned officers when in passing. Army personnel must salute with the right hand. If you walk on his left side, his salute will not be interrupted or delayed.

    Public Displays of Affection

    • Uniformed military personnel are not allowed to publicly display affection with their wives. Kissing or holding hands in public can make him subject to disciplinary action if he is seen. Allow him to properly escort you with "locked elbows."

    Use Rankings

    • When referring to or addressing officers, do not use "sir" or "ma'am." Use the individual's ranking and his last name, such as "Sergeant Jones." When you are speaking to others about your husband, use his first, last or nickname. Do not use his rank when speaking to or about him.
