What Does "Set Up" Mean on a Party Invitation?

Party invitations help generate anticipation of a coming event and serves as a resource for important information. If your invitation includes the words "set up," then the event host has included instructions related to the beginning of the party that you should take heed to.

Time Frame

The set up period for a large, formal event is usually four hours before the official start time of the party. For a smaller party, two hours of set up is standard. Your invitation should be listed with start and end times if the words "set up" are present.

Instructions

Seek clarification when you RSVP for the party. In some cases, the host may want you to arrive early to assist with set up, but in other cases he may be implying that the period is reserved for set up only and that guests should come only at the official start time.

Set Up Activities

Set up duties include a variety of activities. Read your invitation description thoroughly to determine which relates best to your event. If the event is a surprise, the host may want you to come early to help with the surprise set up which includes finding a discrete place to park your car. Or finding a designated place in the venue to hide before the guest of honor arrives. Standard set up activities include decorating, arranging tables and chairs and setting out food.
