The State of Georgia's Moped Regulations

The State of Georgia's Moped Regulations thumbnail
Georgia traffic laws apply to mopeds.

Though the state of Georgia allows the operation of mopeds on its public streets, it imposes requirements and limitations on moped drivers. Georgia law defines a moped as a motor vehicle that has a maximum speed of 30 miles per hour (mph) and is not equipped with gears that require shifting or a clutch.

  1. Permit

    • To drive a moped on Georgia's public streets, you must be at least 15 years old and possess a driver's license or learner's permit. It is not necessary to register your moped as it is with other motor vehicles.

    Safety

    • You most wear a motorcycle helmet when you ride a moped. If you fail to wear a helmet, you can be ticketed.

    Traffic Regulations

    • Moped riders are required to follow all traffic laws that are applicable to motor vehicle drivers. However, mopeds cannot be driven on roads where the minimum speed is 35 mph or greater.
