Scooters and Safety
There are a variety of scooters that people use for the purpose of travel, mobility and recreation. These different types of scooters include motorized scooters, two-wheeled child scooters and mobility scooters for persons with disabilities. Safety guidelines and recommendations are available for all people who ride scooters, regardless of the kind of scooter they operate.

According to the Riley Hospital for Children, the most common types of scooter injuries that happen to children include fractures, dislocations and wounds to the lower arms, elbows and knees. Children usually obtain these injuries by falling off of a scooter. Safety recommendations for scooters include helmets to protect the head, pads for knees and elbows and wearing clothing such as closed-toed shoes that can help to reduce injuries.

Mobility scooters are typically used by disabled people for the purpose of traveling around from one destination to another. Safety rules for mobility scooters include avoiding cracked and damaged sidewalks and streets, wearing visible clothing that can be clearly seen by motorists and avoiding slanted or hilly terrain. According to the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2004, an estimated 10,015 injuries occurred as a result of riding motorized scooters. Safety recommendations for motorized scooters include wearing a helmet, safety pads and sturdy shoes, as well as avoiding high traffic areas.
