What Is ISO for Camcorders?

Memories should be crystal clear.

It's often a struggle to shoot video in dim settings, although these days camcorders often possess features for almost every type of lighting situation. A camera's ISO setting determines how the camera reacts to available light.

Features

ISO stands for the International Organization of Standardization, which was previously known as the America Standards Association. A camcorder's ISO is the speed at which it responds to light.

Function

A higher ISO should be used when recording video in dark settings, whereas a lower ISO should be used in settings with plenty of natural light. If a higher ISO is used in settings with plenty of natural light, the video quality will decrease.

Research

Check the camcorder specifications before you buy in store or online. A maximum ISO of 1000 is perfect for personal use, but professional use will require more (see Resources).
