How Pneumatic Guns Work

How Pneumatic Guns Work thumbnail
Though more sophisticated in design, pneumatic weapons use the same principles as the ancient blow gun.

Pneumatic guns use compressed air to shoot a projectile forward. Though less efficient in combat than weapons with traditional firing mechanisms, pneumatic guns are commonly used for outdoor sports.

  1. Pneumatic Principles

    • In a pneumatic system, gas is compressed into a small reservoir, then released to create power. A pneumatic gun uses the power released from the compressed gas to project its ammunition at the desired target.

    Types

    • Compressed air is the most basic pneumatic weapon fuel, but charging these weapons may require repeated pumps of air. Many pneumatic guns use a coiled spring for added power, or use CO2 (carbon dioxide) cartridges instead of compressed air to allow for faster firing.

    Applications

    • The power yielded by pneumatic guns is inferior to that of gunpowder, but the lighter weight and relative safety makes air guns ideal for recreational and competitive activities such as paintball.
