Why Do Feet Peel?

Why Do Feet Peel? thumbnail
Keep your feet healthy and happy to avoid peeling.

It is natural for feet to peel slightly. Dead skin cells form the first layer of skin on the human body. However, if you are experiencing a significant amount of skin peeling on the foot, then you may have a fungal infection or a form of eczema.

  1. Fungal Infection

    • A fungal infection, such as athlete's foot, can be identified by a doctor through skin scrapings. There are many over-the-counter medicines that can treat fungal infections. Your doctor may also prescribe some topical cream to help clear the infection.

    Eczema

    • Eczema is often a reaction to dyes and rubbers used in socks and sneakers. It typically presents itself as a series of small raised bumps that can turn into itchy, scaly skin that will peel off. Eczema is treated by changing the socks and shoes worn by the individual.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Check with your family doctor before attempting any preventative measures. Plan to switch to socks that are breathable, such as 60% cotton, and change shoes every day. Also wash your feet every day and make sure to thoroughly dry them.
