What Does Changing Your Name Cost?

There may be an additional fee when ordering new credit cards with your new name on them.

Several factors must be considered when calculating the cost of legally changing your name. The courts will want to know the purpose behind changing your name, such as recently married or divorced.

No Charge

There is no charge to legally have your name changed if you have recently been married or divorced. As long as you bring the proper documents to a Social Security Administration office, there will be no fee for the government to register your new name on your social security card.

Court Fees

If you are requesting the courts to change your name other than during a time of marriage or divorce there may be court costs associated with the change. Most states will charge fees, ranging from $100 to $150, and will include filing fees, administration costs, recording fees and a certified copy of any documents related to the name change.

Additional Fees

In some cases when changing a name there may be some additional costs associated with the actual name change. Those costs may include the cost of replacing a driver's license, passport, credit cards and any other item you may have to have replaced or reissued.
