What Do the Marines Teach You?

The U.S. Marine Corps expects impeccable behavior of officers and enlisted members. All recruits are taught the core values and high standards expected of them whether on or off duty. Marines also learn trades that will help them in civilian life, such as vehicle mechanics, engineering and avionics.

Core Values

Honor, courage and commitment are the core values instilled into recruits joining the U.S. Marine Corps. Recruits are taught to honor and respect others, morally and ethically. Mental, moral and physical strength are honed to overcome fear and gain courage. The Marines aim to instill commitment, determination and dedication into every recruit.

Teamwork

U.S. Marine Corps Basic Combat Training teaches the need for teamwork. Units are taught to work as a team to overcome obstacles and tactical problems. Recruits are encouraged to work as a team during a series of physical and mental challenges.

Combat Training

Marine Corps recruits are taught to handle, disassemble, reassemble and fire an M-16 combat rifle. Recruits must qualify in a series of live firings and weapons handling tests. Unarmed combat is taught in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. The program combines traditional martial arts with combat techniques.
