DMV Rules on Electric Scooters in Georgia

Georgia law classifies electric scooters as motor-driven cycles.

While Georgia does not have specific laws regarding the use of electric scooters, the state regulates all motor-driven cycles, including electric scooters, in the same way. Depending on the scooter's engine size, different laws must be followed.

Types

Georgia's Department of Driver Services classifies all motor-driven cycles into two categories. Electric scooters that have an engine size of 51 cubic centimeters or larger are in one class, while those with engines that are 50 cc or smaller are considered mopeds and must adhere to different state rules.

Requirements

Georgia drivers using an electric scooter with a 51 cc or larger engine must adhere to all rules and regulations regarding motorcycle driving. Drivers must hold a motorcycle license, register their scooter, carry proof of insurance, follow all motorcycle driving laws and wear protective helmets when driving their scooter is in the state.

Considerations

Mopeds, or electric scooters with an engine smaller than 50 cc, are exempt from the state's registration and license requirements. Drivers must be at least 15 and hold valid state permits or driver's licenses and wear helmets at all times. Mopeds are permitted on public roads where the minimum speed limit is 35 or below and drivers must adhere to all state driving laws when driving the scooter on public roads.
