Does a DSL Filter Incease Speed?

DSL filters do not necessarily boost the speed of your line.

A 2010 Federal Communications Commission report found that broadband subscribers get as little as half of their promised speed from the ISP. Often, users receive less than their rated speed because of poor settings or equipment. A DSL filter can increase your speed in certain cases.

Identification

A DSL filter can improve the speed of your line if you have other land-line services, such as voice or an alarm system. Other analog signals can interfere with your DSL signal.

Considerations

If you only have DSL and no other analog services, you do not need a DSL filter. In some cases, such as when you use a combined router and modem, a DSL filter can slow down your line, according to Microsoft.

Tip

Instead of using a DSL filter, consider asking your telephone company to install a DSL splitter. Most DSL filters sent out by the telephone company are of poor quality. A splitter is installed directly on your DSL line.
