Toxin Exposure

Small amounts of some toxic materials, such as heavy metals, are necessary to support life according to the Occupational Health And Safety Administration. However, exposure to large amounts of most toxins can cause anything from minor symptoms to serious illness.

Types

There are many different types of toxins, some are more common than others. Pesticides, used to control pests such as rodents and bedbugs, contain large amounts of toxins. Certain types of paint, old tin toys and even some costume jewelry all contain the toxin lead.

Effects

The effects of exposure to certain toxins can be severe. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Studies, an ongoing study of pesticide exposure found the subjects to be suffering from insomnia, headaches and dizziness. Lead poisoning side-effects include headaches, stomach complaints and even kidney failure.

Prevention

Following a few basic procedures can reduce the likelihood of exposure to toxins. Reduce animal fat intake and always check any packaging containing food. Thoroughly wash fruit and vegetables to remove any pesticides before cooking. Always check the labels of any household paints and cleaners for toxic material.
