What Is Code Orange at an Airport?

After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the Department of Homeland Security implemented a color-coded advisory system to alert passengers of the perceived threat level of attacks. Orange is one of the color codes in this system.

Orange Alert

Orange is the second most severe advisory color; it means that the threat level of terrorist attacks is high. The Department of Homeland Security advises U.S. air travelers to take extra precautions when traveling during a code orange alert.

Other Colors

Red represents a severe threat of terrorist attacks; this is the highest threat level. Yellow represents a significant risk of terrorist attacks, and is a lower threat level than orange. A blue alert represents a general level of threat: it means that passengers should be guarded. A green code means that there is a low threat of terrorist attacks.

Recommendations

The DHS recommends that air travel passengers establish emergency preparedness kits and emergency plans for themselves and their families during a code orange threat level. It encourages travelers to take note of their surroundings and report suspicious activities to airport authorities.
