Chlorine gas, even in low amounts, irritates the eyes and lungs, causing respiratory symptoms and nausea. More severe effects include pneumonia and death.

Bleach is also dangerous when combined with other common chemicals including ammonia, oven cleaner, drain cleaner and some detergents. Always use bleach in a well-ventilated area. Keep all cleaners in their original containers and read labels carefully before use.

Bleach is safest when diluted with water. Rinse surfaces well after cleaning with bleach. A mixture of vinegar and water makes an effective glass cleaner, and baking soda adds cleaning power without harmful chemical interaction.
