Office environments require employees to do a lot of sitting and desk work. While the concept of being seated all day may sound relaxing, it can be incredibly uncomfortable with the wrong type of chair. An ergonomic office chair is optimal to reduce back strain and provide additional support.

    • According to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), office chairs play a significant role in preventing occupational injuries. Ergonomically-correct chairs reduce awkward postures that cause muscular aches and pains. Providing good office chairs is especially important for people with preexisting back conditions, so that their issues do not worsen.

    Backrest

    • OSHA explains that backrests should be adjustable and have adequate lumbar support to fit the individual who is seated. Adjustable backrests allow employees to select a posture that is comfortable for them. Lumbar support also should be adjustable, so that regardless of an employee's height, they are able to manipulate the lumbar cushion to fit the small of their back.

    • Seats should be adjustable so that employees can lower or raise the seats in an effort to maintain their feet flat on the floor. Seats that are too high or too low cause employees to have incorrect posture, which can cause back pain.
