Can I Insure International Packages with the USPS?

Can I Insure International Packages with the USPS? thumbnail
USPS offers insurance options for packages mailed internationally.

While not all packages mailed internationally from the United States may be insured, the United States Postal Service (USPS) offers several services for customers wishing to insure their international packages.

  1. Types

    • The USPS offers insurance for packages shipped through its Global Express Guaranteed, Express Mail International and Priority Mail International programs. Each program offers its own insurance program and fees. Cost and availability vary based on the country the package is going to and the package's value and content.

    Considerations

    • Global Express Guarantee packages come with basic insurance coverage up to $100 included in the shipment cost, and extra insurance coverage is available up to $2,499. Express Mail International offers the same $100 coverage but allows extra coverage up to $5,000. Priority Mail International packages offer indemnity coverage that is calculated based on the object's weight or value, whichever is less. Priority Mail customers may also choose to waive indemnity coverage and purchase insurance coverage, up to $5,000.

    Warning

    • Priority Mail International packages shipped in a flat rate envelope or small flat rate box are not eligible for indemnity or insurance coverage. Packages shipped internationally through means other than Priority Mail International, Express Mail International or Global Express Guaranteed are not eligible for insurance through the USPS.
