Criteria for a Navy Commendation Medal

The Navy Commendation Medal is awarded for heroic achievement or meritorious service by those who have served in any capacity of the U.S.Navy. Certain criteria must be met before the Navy Commendation Medal is awarded.

  1. Acts of Heroism

    • The Navy Commendation Medal is awarded for acts of heroism that call for special recognition. Such acts are not eligible for the Bronze Star Medal when combat is involved or the Navy and Marine Corps Medal when combat is not involved.

    Meritorious Achievement

    • For achievement that calls for outstanding and special recognition, the Navy Commendation Medal is awarded when the achievement constitutes a specific contribution to naval service, such as procedure or organization. Such achievement is not eligible for the Bronze Star medal when combat is involved or the Meritorious Service Medal or Air Medal when combat is not involved.

    Meritorious Service

    • The Navy Commendation Medal is also awarded for an extended period of time in which a higher award may be recommended or received for certain acts. The performance of service should be above the individual's pay grade or rate and be above the degree of excellence reflected on the individual's fitness report or personnel records.
