Tales of war, friendship and defeat imbue the history of Drambuie, a Scottish liqueur. Modern bartenders serve it in a variety of ways, from straight on the rocks to the classic rusty nail to Drambuie cocktails made with ginger beer, soda, ginger ale and orange juice. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. The Name

    • First produced in 1745, the liqueur was called An Dram Buidheach, which translates from Scottish into English as "the drink that satisfies." The name was changed and registered as Drambuie in 1893.

    Drambuie History

    • When Charles Edward Stuart, more famously known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was 23 years old, he traveled to Scotland in hopes of regaining the thrones in England, Ireland and Scotland that had been stripped from his family. He reportedly sipped a few drops each day of a secret beverage he carried with him. Although he lost his battle to regain power, he was so impressed with the loyalty of his faithful friend and advocate Captain John MacKinnon that he gave him the secret recipe that became Drambuie.

    Liqueur Ingredients

    • The Drambuie recipe is a closely guarded secret. It contains Scottish heather honey and Scotch whiskey but the herbs and spices are a mystery to all but a few. However, fans suspect it contains cloves and saffron.
