Ethical Massage Practitioner Certification Program

Ethical Massage Practitioner Certification Program thumbnail
Legitimate massage professionals should become certified by the NCBTMB.

While there are many massage parlors that allow illegal activities to be conducted by masseuses, there are also many legitimate operators. Certification by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB) can be beneficial.

  1. The NCBTMB

    • The NCBTMB is a certification board for practitioners of ethical therapeutic massage. The organization requires strict adherence to a standard of practice and code of ethics. Certification requires attaining minimum standards of education, demonstrating skills, abilities and knowledge and passing the NCBTMB examination.

    Certification Requirements

    • Applicants must complete a minimum of 500 hours of instruction in therapeutic massage, master basic skills and abilities, receive a passing score on the official NCBTMB examination, take an oath to uphold the standards of conduct and ethics and pay the fees.

    Studying for the NCBTMB Examinations

    • The NCBTMB offers two examinations: the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage (NCETM) and the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB). Both are available in Spanish, where permitted by state requirements.

The NCBTMB website provides a study guide and information about the examination. All of the required forms are available at the site. Each section of the examination covers six basic topics. Each exam contains 160 multiple-choice questions. An online practice examination is available.
