What Is the Primary Function of Flowers? thumbnail
Brightly colored flowers attract bees, which gather both pollen and nectar.

Flowers are bright and colorful, but beyond the aesthetic value they hold for humans, they also serve an important function to the plant. The main purpose of a flower is to allow the plant to reproduce. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Reproductive Organs

    • Some flowers can fertilize themselves while some flowers only have male or female parts and must be planted near opposite sex plants. The female part is known as the carpel, which produces the seed and the fruit. The male part is the stamen, which produces pollen.

    Petals

    • The petals of the flower are brightly colored to attract pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. When they land on the flowers looking for nectar, grains of pollen brush off on their bodies and are taken to other flowers.

    Scent

    • Many flowers have a pleasant scent in order to further attract insects and pollinators. Scent is useful at night when the flower's colors cannot be seen.
