Civil lawyers handle a variety of cases such as divorces, adoptions, contract disputes, trademark infringement and wills and trusts. In order to practice civil law, a lawyer must first be licensed and then gain practical experience.

A civil lawyer must first obtain an undergraduate degree in the field of her choice. She must then complete three years of law school, culminating in a Juris Doctorate degree at an American Bar Association-accredited law school or the equivalent education at a foreign institution.
Licensing

Upon completion of law school, a civil lawyer must take the Bar Examination in the state where he plans to practice.
