There are several types of career compatibility tests. Tests vary depending on the specific needs of the employer or job seeker. Among the most common types of tests are skill-based assessments, which measure an applicant's skills against those required for the occupation; personality tests, which match the personal nature of the applicant with her desired position; and career interest assessments, which determine the most appropriate career choice based on personal interest and aptitude.

The tests are used by employers searching for qualified candidates or job seekers looking for a position they can turn into a career. Many tests measure predictable behavior such as how an employee will respond in certain situations or the likelihood an employee will resign from a position.

Test characteristics vary considerably. Some tests are in a question and answer format. Other tests take the participants through a series of words or phrases to identify natural behaviors and responses to certain situations or stimuli. For example, the test taker may be asked to choose a word or phrase that best describes how he would normally react under pressure. Available choices may include explosive, calm, cautious or anxious. Most tests have a method of determining if the participant is being honest in answering the assessment questions.
