Subutex Facts

Subutex (buprenorphine) refers to a drug used to treat addiction to opiods, such as heroin and narcotics. As of 2010, Subutex and Suboxone, a combination product, represent the only buprenorphine drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating opiod addiction, according to the U.S. Department of Health.

  1. Features

    • Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist, which means it is less powerful than heroin, methadone and other full agonist opioids. Opioid addicts can therefore take buprenorphine instead of other opioids and avoid withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting opioids. Subutex is administered in sublingual tablets.

    Abuse

    • Since buprenorphine produces many opioid effects, such as euphoria, Subutex and other buprenorphine products are sometimes abused. If you take Subutex, make sure you store your tablets in a secure place and never share with others.

    Side Effects

    • Subutex may cause headache, constipation, vomiting, sweating, sleeping problems and stomach pain. Call your doctor if you experience breathing problems, hives, jaundice, itching, appetite loss or extreme tiredness.
