Becoming a firefighter is not an easy process.

Firefighting is a rewarding, challenging and highly respected profession. Unfortunately, it is not easy to become a firefighter. Candidates face many requirements, and competition for a limited number of jobs is typically high.

  1. Previous Experience

    • Most firefighters have prior experience before applying for the job. Such experience includes working as a licensed paramedic or emergency medical technician. In many cases, it involves serving as a volunteer firefighter for smaller localities without a professional force. Volunteering can be a good way to gain experience and training.

    Medical and Physical Requirements

    • Because of the demands of the job, firefighters must be in top physical shape. They must also be able to pass comprehensive medical and psychological examinations.

    Written Examinations

    • The written exam is one of the primary screening tools for fire-department candidates. Those looking to become firefighters must spend time studying for the exam and possibly taking it multiple times or in multiple places until a passing score is achieved.
