The History of Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy is an alternative therapy that uses a simple shot of fluid to trigger the immune system to work when all else is failing for someone in pain. It is considered a natural therapy.

    • According to Prolotherapy.com, a form of this treatment was used by Hippocrates on wounded soldiers. To heal a wounded joint that was painful for a soldier, Hippocrates stuck the joint with a hot poker. The hot pokers have since been replaced with needles.

    Identification

    • A sugar solution is used to in the needles to heal injured ligaments and tendons. This solution causes an inflammation inside the tendons and/or ligaments. An increased blood flow to that area brings with it the nutrients needed to heal the problem, according to Prolotherapy.com.

    Time Frame

    • Prolotherapy.com states that it can take an average of four to six treatments for this alternative therapy to work. They also mention that sometimes it can even take 10 or more, depending on how willing the body is to heal itself.
