Chinese Tibetan Conflict

The Chinese Tibetan conflict stems from a disagreement about the legal status of Tibet. China believes Tibet has been part of the Chinese nation since the mid-13th century, while Tibetans argue that until the Chinese military invaded Tibet in 1951 it was a fully functioning independent republic.

Military Invasion

The People's Liberation Army of China seized military control of Tibet in 1951, and ever since this high-altitude Himalayan land has experienced unrest.

Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama, Tibet's former leader, has led a government in exile that campaigns against Beijing's rule. After a failed uprising in 1959, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee Tibet and has traveled the world gaining recognition for Tibetans' liberation from Chinese control. A Buddhist leader, he advocates non-violent protests and in 1989 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work.

Protests

As a result of the conflict, there have been several uprisings and protests in Tibet. In March 2008, Buddhist monks staged the largest protest since 1989, which ended in violent clashes with Chinese security forces. In an attempt to placate objectors, the Chinese government invested in the Tibetan economy, but rights groups like FreeTibet argue this has not stopped the oppression of the Tibetan population and the loss of religious and political freedom.
