Salt, or sodium chloride, will not get rid of carpenter ants. Many species of ants, including carpenter ants, prefer salt over sugar, according to the University of Oklahoma. Does this Spark an idea?

    • According to the University of Oklahoma, one of the most effective food baits for carpenter ants is Pecan Sandy brand cookies. This is because of the salt content in the cookie and not because of the sugar, although the sugar is a secondary incentive.

    • Salt will not act to deter carpenter ants, but it can be used to help kill them, according to the University of Minnesota. Combine salty foods like Pecan Sandy cookies with a slow-acting insecticide bait near the openings of carpenter ant colonies.

    • Carpenter ants live in colonies and commonly share food with other colony members. By using baited food, the ants take the poisoned food back to the colony to share with other ants. The poison then spreads throughout the colony, killing the ants.
